October 2017 marks the 51st anniversary of the founding of the Black Panther Party. Hip Hop TV is partnering with Stellium and Legacy Consulting Group to host events commemorating the anniversary from October 13-14th in Oakland, California.
The theme of our commemoration is “Power To The People”. The Black Panther Party is well-known and admired in Oakland and around the world for its stand against police brutality, for its Survival Programs - which included free breakfast for school children and free health clinics - its coalitions with other people of color, and its effort to bring about revolutionary change in America. The anniversary events will explore and celebrate the history and legacy of the Black Panther Party.
We hope you will join us in commemorating this historic 51st anniversary by joining us at our opening reception and conference at Merritt College on Fri, Oct 13th followed by an all day music celebration on Sat, Oct 14th where the Power to the People stage will be featured at Life is Living Festival at DeFremery Park.

A Message from the Organizers
The organizers of the Black Panther Party's 51st Anniversary Celebration events are excited about this special celebration commemorating the Party's history and legacy. Our focus is not just looking backwards and acknowledging the past, but learning the lessons from that past to prepare us for the challenges ahead. Each person has the ability to help lift up others, stand against oppression, call out discrimination and make the world better, but doing that strategically is essential to sustainably solving problems and making measurable progress for our communities.
Additionally, the personal belief of each organizer in the healing and unifying benefits of social justice, mutual understanding, genuine communication and strategic collaboration are the keys to truly enlightening and empowering individuals to bring their unique best to the world everyday. Our intention in organizing the Party's annual celebration is to thoughtfully highlight, critically examine and purposely leverage the mission, history and outcomes that the Black Panther Party existed for. The theme for the Opening Reception and Panel is "How Can The Legacy Of The Black Panther Party Move Us Forward Today?" That question is the foundation of all of the activities taking place October 13th and 14th as we seek to elevate, not denigrate; empower, not disenfranchise; inspire, not disappoint; and unify, not divide the community.
We, the organizers, are different in many ways including gender, race, socioeconomic status, educational background, political beliefs and undoubtedly other characteristics that make each of us unique. However, what brings all of us together, focused singularly on lifting up the community is the value of lessons that can be learned by illuminating the transformative legacy of activism, social justice and community empowerment that WAS and IS The Black Panther Party. Our purpose and goal REQUIRES that we are moving forward with our eyes fixed on the prize and our commitment firm to help inform, strengthen and empower children, adults, families and our community because the Bay Area needs this and the time is now.
Thank you for joining us in celebrating the legacy of The Black Panther Party to make a difference in our communities today and tomorrow. We'll see you on Friday and Saturday, October 13-14.
